Due to its natural beauties and fascinating varieties of natural species within the grounds belonging to the city of Senj many areas are proclaimed to be the protected areas. They are: The Velebit Park of Biosphere which includes the forests Of Štirovača; The Zavratnica Bay (our " fiord"); The National Park of North Velebit with its Botanical Garden; A Reservation of Hajdučki and Rožanski Kukovi; The Premužić's Path and so on.

  Sjeverni Velebit National Park

Year of establishment: 1999
Area: 109 km2
Altitude Range: 518 – 1676 m
Highest peak: Veliki Zavižan, Gromovača, Vratarski kuk
Main features:
• numerous karst phenomena and caving objects - deep pits, karrens, sinkholes…
• preserved forest communities
• high biological diversity, plenty of endemic species
• landscape diversity - picturesque valleys, pastures, rocks, screes
• remains of traditional architecture - old summer lodgings

Specially Protected Areas:
• strict reserve: Hajdučki i Rožanski kukovi
• special botanical reserves: Visibaba, Zavižan-Balinovac-Velika kosa with Velebit botanical garden

Park prirode Velebit

Year of establishment: 1981
UNESCO/MAB – Biosphere Reserve: 1978
Area: 2274 km2
Altitude range: 0 – 1757 m
Highest peak: Vaganski vrh
Main features:
• longest mountain of the Dinaric range - 145 km
• karst phenomena – barren rocks of different shapes, canyons, valleys, caves and pits
• hydro geological phenomena - karst rivers with travertine barriers, underground flows which emerge in the sea as submarine springs
• landscape diversity - alteration of barren limestone rocks with beech, fir and spruce forests
• biological diversity - 2700 plant species, numerous endemic species of flora and fauna, particularly in the underground and waters

Specially Protected Areas:
• national parks: Paklenica and Sjeverni Velebit
• protected landscape: Zavratnica
• geomorphologic nature monuments: Cerovačke pećine and Modrič cave
• palaeontological nature monument: Velnićka glavica
• special forest reserve: Štirovača - virgin forests of beech and fir
