The Senj and the Rijeka diocess were united in 1969. into the Rijeka-Senj archdiocese with residence in Rijeka, but the possession of the Senj diocesewhich consists of the diocese and the cathedral archives, the library of the diocese and the treasury of the cathedral remained in Senj. With the aim to run and preserve this possession the Institution of Sacral Heritage was founded in 1995.

The Bishopic and Cathedral Archive

Up to the year 1970., the Bishopic archive in Senj kept records from its establisment but those concerning the Modruška or the Krbava only from 1617. When the administration was run by the bishops in Senj. Apart from the Bishopic archive there was the archive of the Cathedral of Senj. Both archives sufered severe damages especially durig World war II, so today we can tell only about their remains. But they are very valuable because they preserve the data which have not been toroughly studied yet and which can be a very important source of information for the history of the above mentioned Bishop’s dioceses. The length of the archival material is about 100 meters.

All the data and books are kept up to date until the year 1800. The cataloging of the historical data from the 19th and 20th centuries being processed , we cannot define the age of these archives but they are certanly older than the oldest document in any of them. The oldest document kept at the Bishopic archive is the one from 1445. (a testified statement) and the oldest recorded document (missing from the archive) dates from the year 1000. In the archive of the Cathedral there is a document from 1272. (a copy), while the oldest recorded document is from 1185. The archival material is written mainly in Croatian, German and Italian languages which all use the Latin alphabet. The archive used to have a large collection of documents in the Glagolic alphabet but unfortunately only few have been preserved up to present days.

Bishopic Library

2. posebne zbirke
Kao posebne zbirke formirane su:
- Zbirka knjiga iz XV., XVI. i XVII. st. (208 svezaka).
- Zbirka rukopisnih knjiga (71 naslov).
- Zbirka muzikalija (tiskana i rukopisna građa).
